Week 7 Journal

This has been a very stressful week!! I was really worried about these genres that we had to do, turns out they were a bit easier that I expected them to be. I originally intended to do my powerpoint presentation but I am having problems with getting the pictures I want on it. Plus I do not really know how to post it online so I figured I would continue putting it together and try to turn it in when I have more time to work out the kinks. It was very helpful to evaluate others work and to see there ideas on things and how they are doing. It was also helpful to make me think about voice and audience, I kind of lose those thought when I am composing my genre. I still need to do the mailing list assignment but this got me thinking about my list. I decided I would like to find a different list to join in addition to the dysphagia one. It really isn’t what I am looking for. As I am getting deeper into this project I like swallowing more and more. There are a lot of things that I really didn’t think about until now. Like when I wrote the patients voice journal I thought, you know this really happens. We, as SLP’s and the others involved try to keep them eating no matter what, we have to keep them off of feeding tubes. But what about the patients that this is not a neurological issue, their thought processes are fine, it is just the swallowing process as a motor movement, think how their lives are effected, think about how much of our time is spent “at the table”. We meet for lunch, have dinner with family, the two biggest holidays are pretty much spent around the table eating. They are really missing out on a lot by having a dysphagia. I really never though about it in this light until this past week. This has been a very enlightening week for me in terms of where I want this to go, my future genres, and what kind of work I want to do.
